2630 Steering Gear Shaft & Yoke

When removing my steering column I drained the oil from the gear shaft and yoke area, where the connecting rod attaches to the yoke, as instructed by the tech manual. The oil was very thick and black. I wiped the area out as best I could and flushed it with 2 or 3 quarts of oil. I could not find an inlet or return for oil to that area. I asked my dealer why the oil would be in such bad shape compared to the rest of the oil to which he replied “there shouldn’t be any oil in there unless the steering valve is leaking”.

Is that true? If so, why would the tech manual state to “drain the oil at plug on the right side of the clutch housing”?

That's the way they always are. Oil doesn't circulate well in that area and gets pretty dirty looking. Clean it up, don't worry about it, and put it all back together.
