how does it work on a 2040? independent, dual clutch, or what?
can't seem to start engine w/o PTO being engaged on this diesel
thanks

If it doesn't have a third lever between the 2 gearshift levers it's a live pto with a dual stage clutch. Control lever would be by left heel if sitting in seat.

You have 5279 posts and call yourself a tractor guru and you need help with your guestion??????

Jim TX: thank you very much.

And Mr. 44diesel tech: Thank you for all your help, too. I don't call my self 'guru' or any other title. YT assigns those & I have no control. They assign them on the basis of the number to times they believe a person has helped or tried to help a fellow member. I do in fact have an extremely broad & in depth knowledge of many electrical & mechanical things, BUT I do not know everything. When I don't know, I'm not too falsely-proud to learn by asking. By your post, you are not here to help and since you think I should know everything, then it follows that you do know eveerything, so one might ask, if not here to help, and have no need to ask for help, then why are you here?

I did not know YT assigns that title. I will retract what I said in my post. Forgive me.

I think YT assigns Tractor Expert @ 2500 posts and Tractor Guru @ 5000 posts. I've been around & worked on JD tractors since my teens and I don't consider myself an expert and I'm getting to be old.

BTW what do you think would keep a JD 2155 with dual factory scv's from operating a cylinder out but then NOT back in? If one reverses hoses then it's the same scenario. But joystick loader control on same tractor operates cyl correctly. This tractor came with the cheaper Pioneer type receptacles. I posted a question previously but no problem soling answers. Thanks for any help.

I would look at the poppet valves, It sounds like one of the rollers is broke out, the pressure one on the side thats not working properly.I've been doing this since I was a teenager also..and I'm still learning everyday,,I enjoy learning and sharing what I have learned,,and haveing a little fun in the mix makes it even better...

I agree but what are the chances of this happening on both sets of scv's. This tractor has dual scv's and they both do same way.

It's been a long time since I've peered inside one but can't one remove the tops of control box and check rollers without removing box?

Thanks,Jim

I see what you mean about "both" of them acting up,,but it almost has to be in the valve since that is what determined the direction of flow,,you can peek in to the top and maybe see the rollers on the poppet valves, but they come out from the other end..I'll think some more about this....

I got a reply on my original post about the 2155 and JDGnut brought up the fact that a 2155 could have poppet or spool type scvs. But I haven't seen tractor just talked on phone to owner. Thanks for any clues.
