'40 JD B Head - Forgot Lead washers!

Sitting by the fire after working out in the below zero barn all day. Relaxing, warming up by the fire and thinking through today's work. Then realized I forgot to put the lead washers on before torquing down the head nuts. Can I remove all the nuts, without disturbing the head and gasket, add the washers and reinstall the nuts? Will the head gasket be OK?

I'd try it. Just remove one at a time and replace it to the proper torque.

I cant remember for sure, but if I'm thinking correctly the only water that should be present is on the rocker studs. The others are just a safety net.

The next thing is that you may not have actually gotten the gasket compressed as much as it should be since the washers actually lubricate the nuts as they spin against the head.

I think you will be fine with adding the washers and torqueing it back.

i wouldnt worry bout it i dont use them and we just figured up my compression ratio on my a 2 days ago and it comes out to 14 to 1 no leaks on it other than it stretched the block studs so it seeped oil tearing it down to fix that as i type

I took them off one at a time from the center out, added the washer and nut, torqued, and on to the next one. Seemed to work OK. Hope to finish it up next weekend and get her running. Thanks to everybody for the help!
