2840 pto not working after split

Hi,

just got done with my first split on a green tractor... and wanting some confirmation of what i suspect might be the problem, and how to go about fixing it.

Split the tractor between the transmission and clutch housing to replace a loose oil line, clamp and ended up with a newer transmission driven pump.

Got the tractor back together and started ... the hydraulics now work. But... the PTO doesn't turn when engaged.

Going back together, the PTO was able to turn the whole time, so thinking that the coupling (T30767) that's in the transmission housing fell off when splitting, and didn't realize it before it went back together.

Assuming that's the problem, then is it fixable by taking the PTO shaft out of the rear end, or is another split required? Can one get at it by taking the rockshaft housing off?

thanks!

That is very likely what has happened, darn it,,I'm fairly sure that you will need to re-split it, the collar that is in question cannot be reached from the top or the rear. When you go back in,check to see if there is a bushing to hold the pressure pipe foward in the rear part of the houseing, that was one of the problems with them the line would work to the rear and "un-plug" from the pump manifold, also I have drilled and taped the hole in the rear where the lube line goes in and screwed a allen headed pipe plug with a 5/16 hole drilled into it to 'orfice' down the lube flow to help more oil go foward to the front pump,,I have had "lots" of run-ins with this system...

What the other guys say and also it might just be a simple adjustment of the engaging linkages is the problem.

I know that if my 2140/2750 is not adjusted exactly it will not go into gear. I have to sometimes lightly engage the PTO lever as I try to select the intended position (540/1000 RMP) on the handshift PTO speed changer.

This is assuming that you have the sound guard cab.

2840's didn't have option of SGB if built for USA sales.

OK thanks Tx Jim, I wasn't sure.

Helped a guy with a 2550 that was split and lost the couple inside. Fished through the pto hole from the back and slid it on the shaft inside. Might have got lucky. chris

The trick is keeping the shift coupler from falling off of the shift fork, when you pull the rear shaft and no support from the front..I would re-split...

ok, so...

tried taking the PTO shaft out of the back to get the coupling back on.

Ended up with a flashlight on the end of a long pole, and 2 electric fence posts to try and reposition the coupling going from the back of the tractor thru the transmission housing. Guess Deere made it so that if you take the PTO shaft out when the tractor isn't split, the coupling doesn't fall down and there wasn't room in there to get the coupling back on.

Ended up splitting the tractor 1/4" of an inch to move the shaft forward that's in the clutch housing, and then the above method worked, but that 1/4" inch of a split made all the difference!
