51 B water in oil....

I thought I'd ask a kind of survey question to anyone who's had this problem. Where was the leak? Right now I dont know where, but I definately have one thats not real bad, but bad enough. I have never taken the block off a B. Ive searched and read about this problem. I would like to know as much as possible before I tear into my water leak problem this winter.
Just looking for some good advice. Thanks.

So where is it leaking? Into a cylinder, or on the outside? Inside the valve cover? Into the crankcase?

my 51 B has same problem- pull valve cover and i'll bet the water is coming from intake push rod tubes in cylinder head. these tubes are notorious for develeping leaks. they are replaceable. they seal the water jacket in cylinder head where the push rods pass through. i was told they can be replaced without removing cylinder head, but was advised against it without speical tools. if you install bolts instead of called for studs in head for intake manifold, be sure not to install too long of bolts as they can hit tube and damage it. good luck, d. coleman(51B&48M)

I may be mistaken but I don't think a '51 B has the tubes you talk about. The head has "tubes" cast right into it. Only time they might leak coolant is if someone put too long bolts in the upper water pipe casting and broke into them or it has frozen up at one time breaking them.

According to the parts book, they had 2 until the end of the B. I think the late A lost the tubes.

upper water pipe casting is in the cylinder block, the tubes are in the head, and there were tubes in the late model "B" head i've got them in my 51B. i was told the very late heads came without tubes(sleeves were cast into head) i havent been able to locate this type of head. d. coleman
