unstyled D air cleaner element

I have a 1929 model D and I am missing the air cleaner insert or element (#2 in photo). Can anyone tell me what these are made out of? I have seen a picture of one for sale, but it looks pretty nasty. Are these able to be cleaned up?

Silverado, is 100% correct. Mine too is full of horse hair. At first it was totally plugged with dirt and grease. Using strong degergent,,,violent agitation in water, followed by strong jet of compressed air the unit is just like new. Obviously, no after market on these items. But I think you could easily make one in an afternoon using, say hardware wire, and filter material used in small engine air cleaners.

Clearly it would take a bit of creativity, but probably not that difficult once you spend a few days thinking through the options and come up with a good home-built.
Best wishes, Harvey

Is this serviceable? How can you recondition these after 80 years of accumulated, filtered crud? This photo is of a similar air cleaner, but the one I might purchase is even dirtier.

That is exactly what I was thinking... if anyone has built a better alternative themselves. It is good to hear that the horsehair will clean up, but I may try to engineer something else. Thanks for your input.
