Posting for a friend : What is the compression for a newly rebuilt 51 B ?, another question, this sound's a little crazy, but after he runs it for a while there is a loud bang, a puff of smoke out the exaust and out around the clutch pully as if there was an explosion in the crankcase. weard ! He has vented the crankcase and checked the oil for gas contamation. Any ideas ? oh yes , the compression is 80 pr in , in each cylinder. THANKS !

The comp. on a late B should be around 125 p.s.i. for a stocker. As far as the loud bang goes,i would almost have to be there myself to give my opinion

Sounds like a backfire to me. Maybe he is having a problem with the mag or distributor, Cuts out, unburned air/fuel enters exhaust system, exhaust valve open and hot exhaust ignites mix. Big bang. valve is still open, so it blows smoke up past the valve guides, into the valve cover and then through the vent system to the crankcase and out the clutch pulley.

Yeah, I was thinking that if his compression was really 80 when it should be more like 110, he might have some seriously worn out parts.....
