I have a jd 60 that only runs on 1 cylinder. usually #2. Every now and then it will try to fire on both. The problem i found is that it keeps eating up distributor caps. Is there a bearing that could be bad or something internally in the distributor. Also just out of curiosity, the engine was just rebuilt and seems to have great compression. If the plug wires are removed from the plugs will this tractor run decent on diesel? Thanks just curious

I just dont see it running worth a darn on "diesel" especially with the plug wires removed, in which case it wont run at all. Now if it were an "all fuel" with an all fuel carb and a hot manifold AND SPARK PLUGS it could run on "Tractor Fuel" or "Distillate" or "Drip Fuel" which is similar to todays kersoene, but thats NOT the same as a diesel engine with extreme high compression and diesel fuel thats injected near the top of the compression stroke and heat makes it burn with the expanding gas pressure forcing the piston down.. Even a high compression GAS engine isnt the compression of a diesel engine mind you NO IT WONT RUN ON DIESEL FUEL ESPECIALLY WITH NO PLUGS FIRING

If the distributors shaft bushings are bad the cam lobes and resultant points opening gap can be erratic with mis fires and/or the rotor tip coming too close to the caps pickups.

123 farmer. It sounds like the distributor shaft bushing is worn if it chews up the cap. If you pull the plug wires off, the tractor will not run. That engine was not designed to fire on diesel under high compression. Give it up.

Are you serious about running on diesel without plug wires? I really hope you are, because even a 13 year old knows that a gasoline engine will not run as if it were a diesel.

I have the same trouble with my 60 not wanting to run on one of the cylinders. When you put it under a load it runs even on both but just idling around it misses badly on one. I still haven’t figured out why.

As for the diesel thing, how good is your compression?
My 60 is all fuel and has the correct 65psi compression
I think the gas only models have around 100 psi
My Diesel truck runs 400 psi

On your metering valve you have a bushing on top of it,This bushing gets stuck in the carb body,It needs to come out and be cleaned,Doing this made my 60 hit on both cylinders,In the parts manual its number 45 and 46

another try
