51 B Decal placement

What is the correct specific placement of the hood side decals? I see some centered and some toward the front....both on 51 models. Got them from Jorde and was disappointed to find out that he doesn't supply placement info anymore. You have to call him to find out and he's not answering today. Thanks.

Here is a paragraph from a piece I stasrted to write some time back on decals. The subject got too far-reaching and was scaled back. But, these sentences are true. I hope this helps!

I have a studio picture from Deere and if you wnt to receive it, write me with keyword "Late B Hood Decals" (PatB)
-------------------------

Decals Even Smaller & Moved Forward -- Another noteworthy highlight in the decal progression occurred in November 1949, when Deere moved the "John Deere" decal toward the front of the hood. This date is known to be true for Waterloo tractors, but this timing may not hold for the Dubuque tractors. An exception was the Model G, which had a shutter bracket that was riveted in place in a location where the rivets interfered with a forward decal position. ++++

Pat, like the Two-Cylinder article that is posted says, there is no clear cut date when the decals were moved. I have a 1949 A tractor that was built the day before Christmas, 1948. I have a picture of it when it was a year old and the decals are in the forward position. When I redo it they will be put like they were when new, in the forward position. Mike

One has to believe what one has to believe.

Travis Jorde and I hold to the November 1949 announcement date. There are always exceptions to any "rule of thumb", and there are usually several plausible explanations for each. In the case of hood decals, even the amount of set-back is not set in stone, nor are they always evenly matched; one side versus the other. Finally, putting great faith in 6-decade-old pictures is risky - right up there with trusting of one's 60-year-old memory!

'Sorry to disagree with you, but I am too well convinced on this one. Your post is the one main reason an overall piece will never be published. For every rule found, we have a crowd that says they know of exceptions. Such a document, while of great value, would be totally discredited before hardly onyone was able to read it. (PatB)

"Rules of thumb" are right most of the time. In this instance, I imagine it had more to do with who was putting decals on the tractors for any given day. Perhaps instructions came down the line to change the decals at a certain serial number, etc., and the fellows thought they would just go ahead and make the switch. I trust the picture I have as it is complete with the dealer sticker and a date of the picture. It's not worth losing sleep over but this tractor has been on this farm since new. Mike
