'44 John Deere A - Haying Pictures

Folks on the board have helped me with questions and such about my relatively new (to me) '44 A. The only thing I can repay with is just some pictures of the machine in action baling our 1st cutting last week. It did great hauling hay and running the rake. I think I'll go ahead and give 'er a try on the baler next time, just for fun.

Also posted some video on youtube. Most of that is of our 4520 doing the work, but there is some video of the A on there as well:

Thanks again,

Chet.

5th gear and high idle gave me the ground speed I was looking for. 4th was a little pokey and 6th was way too fast. I was actually pretty pleased with the ride across the field. At least as smooth as my 4520, which has much more "flotation"-type industrial tires. And when you are rolling along raking with sweeping turns, the steering is easy money. Lot's 'o fun.

Looks great, Baling should be fine. I used a 40 A and a 336 baler last year. The non-live PTO was interesting and the windrows had to be fairly light since the horsepower was just barely enough.

Nice video. Fun to see the old iron working. I have the same tractor with ser #540729, hand start with newer powertrol unit I put on for two way hydro. Had her out plowing and discing a few weeks ago, more fun than work. I was wondering if you could take a picture of the linkage from the hand lever to the gov arm and post it. I think mine is home made or from another style tractor either way it is wrong.
Thanks.

Makes me wish I had your paint. The shot I need is blocked by the seat stand. If you sit on the seat and take a pic of the crankcase cover it would show the rod Im looking for, the one from the hand lever to the govenor arm. Where did you find your decals? Did you paint it or professional paint?

Ha! We'll get it right yet... I'm just zooming in on pictures I've already got. I'm afraid it's too dark (and I'm too lazy) to go out to the barn and take a new one. If this doesn't work, just tell me, I'll get one tomorrow...

Nope, I didn't paint it, a fellow from Italy, Texas did. He runs a service station down there, I believe, so I'd call him a professional.

I think thats fine, it shows a straight rod and I think that is what I need to find.
Thanks alot.
Wish I had pictures of me plowing I could share.

I'd like to see that (in person especially). Not a lot of folks plowing around here, this is mostly hay country. Looks like it would be a good time on a old iron tractor.

How close are you to eastern Iowa?
I pulled a 2 bottom case then a three bottom which I stuck too deep both were 14" plows, next time I listen to the old boy about not doing that. Then I pulled a 5-12" which really didnt pull bad but had trouble lifting itself because it started life as a 2 bottom. All were clutch lift. More fun than work.

Nice looking A, thanks for the pics. It will do fine with a baler but if your windrows are real heavy you might find 1st gear too fast. I use a 43 A to bale & last year had to revert back to a late B with creeper gear on a heavy field.

Thanks MoMark. As is typically the case when I'm doing my little 13 acre field, I won't be in too much of a hurry, so running along in low gear is fine by me. Being a non-irrigated grass hay guy in an arid area (North Texas), let's just say that my July and August windrows are usually on the light side anyway! :)
