unstyled a shifter

Hi, I am restoring my grandfathers unstyled A. I have a question. Attached to the shifter cover there is a plat plate that has a cut out for the shifter to pass through in the trans. JD calls this a gear shift interlock # A239R when I move the shifter from up and down the bottom of the shifter hits this interlock. If i pull out on the shift lever then it passes through easily. I guess my question is am I supposed to pull out on shifter to move lever between 1 and 2nd gear or do I need to make some adjustment?

Your help is appreciated.
thanks

LR27,
I ran into the same problem on a '36 "B". Things get worn in 70 years. The shifter is lower than the original design. If you don't want to go to the trouble or expense of finding NOS replacement parts, sometimes you can put a spacer between the snap ring and the fulcrum ball cover. This will raise the shift lever and will usually stop the problem. Good luck.
