John Deere B Transmission

Jason,

It's not all that hard, but it is a pretty involved procedure. It is possible to do it without splitting the tractor, but it is much easier if you do. If you need to renew the PTO gears, shafts and bushings, you will need to split the tractor. Also you can easily replace the differential bearings if you split.

Going from memory, you will need to:

Remove clutch and pulley assembly.
remove brake assemblies
remove first reduction cover
remove first reduction gear
remove flywheel and cover
remove steering wheel and shaft
remove control tower and transmission cover/disconnect wiring harness
remove all the shifters and their shafts.

remove battery box/seat and split tractor if so inclined

Now your ready to start taking the transmission apart. There are only two shafts, with bearings snap rings and locks to keep up with. All explained very well in the JDB service manual.

If you go to all this trouble, you should also replace all the bearings. I'm sure I have left out a few things, but the above is the outline.

If the pic shows up, this is what it will look like. I took the countershaft idler gear out. Had to take everything out to replace. Definately have a manual to help put back together. Not too bad for the first time being in the transmission.

hows this?

Anyone know the trick to get the snap rings out that hold the bearings in for the transmission shafts? Or do I just have to continue with lots of patience and foul language?

I think I used a sharp pointed pick to lift one end up enough so that I could get a screwdriver under it, and then worked it around until I could pop it out.

Does take patience.
