value of 1962 JD 3010 diesel with bad engine?

A guy I know has this tractor for sale-"the engine started missing then went bang" he said- I went to look at it today-someone has the oil pan off and there is a bent bolt-probably a main or con rod bolt-shed was dark and I forgot a flashlight- in the pan plus a broken cam follower and a push rod- he wants $2000- hood is pretty dinged up ,fenders are shot, wide front is good, rear tires match and are good- all 3 pt is there- I think it is worth closer to $1000.
What does everyone else think?

That would be a good price but im sure he wont move it for that unless he's hard up. 2000-2500 is pretty much scrap prices for these old 10 and 20 series tractors due to many reasons. I think its because of the recent record scrap metal highs, tractor pulling world, and new equipment prices. The 4 cylinder engine in the 3010/3020 they say is pricey to work on. Crankshafts are hard to find, new ones can be purchased but are like 1500. I've heard balancers are pretty important to these engines, if they go the engine will fail. You never see a used running engine for these models. If the block is still ok you can probably use it and rebuild that engine, but it will be costly. I'm unsure of sheetmetal, I've seen where abilene machine makes aftermarket hoods for the 6 cylinder tractors, you will have to check for the 3010/3020. If you're looking for a project it will make a good one but after redoing engine (maybe clutch) fixing sheetmetal and new tires youll probably end up with 8000 in it. Do you want to spend the time and money to do it or would you rather just find a good one for that price ready to run?
 
What it is worth and what it would cost to fix are 2 diffrent things. If you junk it, wide front $1000, 3 point arms, $600, $3-400 for single hyd, $6-700 for dual hydraulics, steer motor $250, ect ect ect. Buy it and tear it apart for $2000, no brainer
