JD 2020 12 V alternator install......

I've got to install an alternator on one of these tomorrow, I think he's got a service manual for it, but not sure if there is a wiring diagram in it. Just a favor for a good friends dad, I've replaced some faulty wiring on this one before, but it's been awhile, he finally got an alternator for it, wants me to install it, but he removed the old one for the core charge on the new one, so not taking it apart, has to be a typical 12 volt set up, I assume from the factory for a 2020, just want to make sure I've got everything connected properly, as I did not take the old one off, usually it's plug and play with most of these and if you took it off, you remember the connections or have marked same. Kind of a parts replacer on this one as I never remember the typical 12 volt alternator circuits, and do not want to short it out, simple enough to work on, best to make sure the circuits are correct before firing it back up again, he's been dealing with a draw down on the battery, old one was not charging last I checked with a meter, not sure what else could be a problem, worst case I'll wait until I can find a wiring diagram.

There were a couple of options for alts. on the 2020, and there were problems with the voltage reg. up near the dash, also a common problem with the wire harness to the alt. from the regulator,,If it was mine I would put a self exciteing 10si delco on it and disconect the old harness, one hot wire to the alt.

yeah, the one wire is simple, but as I recall I think it still has whatever came on it, heading up there now, hopefully I'll figure it out, I can take some photos and post back if need be, makes things a little challenging when you did not take it apart sometimes...

The tach on those tractors is mechanical drive so there are no concerns about sending an rpm signal from the alternator.
As for a single wire alternator? The extra price and the need to scream the engine rpms to get them to start charging.
Many people install a single wire run without a warning light or ammeter. Then they wonder why they go through so many batteries and the engine is a slow starter.
It's because the alternator hasn't been charging the entire time from when the engine was started and driven while putting around. Who starts a cold engine and rev's it to redline?
If you can't install a three wire alternator. With three simple little wires, where two of them connect to the same battery or starter post. And the third up to the dash light. You should not be touching anything electrical.

Should have left it to a pro, right ????? Those darned complicated 3 wire alternators..... blade connection with green wire to field, black wire to ground on alternator case from voltage regular, and 2 orange + 1 larger gauge wire to output, from battery, battery wire was spliced with 1 of the orange wires, forget where they go back to now. I replaced the battery wire some time back, something had shorted, burnt the insulation off, rest were ok, soon after he noticed the battery draining down, now 1 year later, aside from the one wire I replaced, still the had the factory color coded wires, so all I really needed was the diagram, thankfully his I&T manual had it shown, boiled down to making sure both those orange wires went to the output terminal, slow rev was charging at 13 volts, higher rpm's was up a little around 15 volts, should be good now.

Knowing Cliffy, probably is, he had the new one on before I got there, I just made sure the wiring was good, belt looked lined up, old pulley was put on the new unit, belt was little loose, he needs to tighten it, probably has that bushing in one of the bins, this one is still in it's "work" clothes, was real short on time, I'll be back up there again, he'll be ok if he needs to clear the driveway of snow, will make sure that alternator is set, don't like cobbing things, kinda why myself and his son went through the wiring harness last year, after seeing that burnt wire.

I know you don't like a single wire set up, but the one's I use start chargeing right away, at low RPM,s, your probably closer to Mexico so you don't get the better parts ,,but I do understand where you comming from, I once had the same opinion of them till my 'starter guy'come up with the one I've been useing, you can still hook a dummy light up to them if you want, that would take it up to 2 wires..one of my reasons for them is the wire harness's get bad, and like this 2020 the reglator and fixtures are unreliable..

Like you say i don"t know en thing about wiring. But i sure wish you would tell me how to wire a three wire GM Alternator to a JD B Tractor for a 12V System?
