'71 4020 fenders?

Are the correct fenders on a '71 different than older 4020's? I looked at one and from the side the frt and back at the top both have a tear-drop shape which is different from what my CRS mind thought. I'm thinking these fenders come off a 4520/4620.

Thanks,Jim

Basically the 4020 fenders are all the same. There are some differences in the way the lights are set up on the 71-72 tractors. From the 4320 on up those fenders were much bigger and it sounds like that is what you have.

This is a 70 4520.

My 4020 standard has fenders like the old 70 D Standard. The fenders in the photo are row crop fenders.

I don't know if its true or not, but someone told me a few years ago that if you ordered a late model ('71 or '72) 4020 from the factory with 18.4-38 rubber, they put the larger fenders on for more clearance. I have a '70 4020 with this size tires on it and the regular fenders on it. There isn'r a whole lot of room between the tire and the fender so there could be some truth to this. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?

The 4020 I'm looking at has 18.4X38 tires. The fenders look similar to the ones on the 4520 but the teardrops are more the same size on this 4020. They appear to have been on this tractor for a long time. Thanks to all as I thought they were strange fenders for a 4020.

This is a rumor that has been around a long time and no one has ever been able to show proof positive either way. It is pretty well accepted the factory never did this but maybe some dealers did.

I don't own a 4020 but I've been told that the larger fenders were an option in '71 and '72. Not sure if it's true. None of the literature I've ever seen shows those fenders on a 4020 but, then again, they don't always show every option in the brochures... usually only the more popular ones. Perhaps, like someone else said, it was a dealer thing.

I [i:99048c39fe][b:99048c39fe]do[/b:99048c39fe][/i:99048c39fe] know that, regardless of small or large fenders, a '71 or '72 should have a yellow CAUTION decal on top of the left fender. This replaced the CAREFUL plate/decal that used to be under the dash on older models. It's very rare to see a tractor with this decal nowadays. Most have been long since painted over.

On the late 4020"s (1971-1972) the larger flat top fenders were an option for the 18.4*38 & 20.8*34 tires, the fender provides more coverage for the larger tire. Yes they are the same fender that is used on a 4320-4620.

The bigger fenders being optional is a common perception. But is there any evidence to support it? Has anyone seen it in print in a dealer sales book? I haven't. Not saying it isn't true but it would be nice to have some evidence to back it up rather than perpetuating what is, essentially, heresay as though it was fact. That's how misinformation gets started. I just think we need to be careful saying this is the way it was if we don't really know for sure. I'll admit the evidence seems to point to it. On the other hand, it's odd that they didn't picture 4020s that way in sales literature (at least not that I've ever seen). Anyone got a '71-'72 sales manual to confirm?
