2840: hyrdraulic lines from hydraulic pump vibrate

Hi,

noticed the other day while doing a walk-round on my 2840 that the hydraulic lines from the hydraulic pump vibrate - noticeable by sound/buzzing. They stop vibrating when i use the loader (or 3pt). The loader is plumbed to the High Pressure line that feeds the power steering, and the outlet on the bottom of the hydraulic filter case.

i'm inclined to think that the stroke control valve isn't quite happy, but not sure about the best way of starting the diagnosis.

Thanks!

The first thing to do is change the filter and see if there is any 'metal fillings' in the bowel and filter..what you find there will determine the next step, if there are gray fillings you will need to find the source, which is normaly the brakes ( most of the time the left brake),,then resolve the brake problem and flush the trans case, best done by pulling the rockshaft and splitting at the clutch houseing and brush & blow while your in there check the oil pipes and change the trans pump, if it's been eating 'grit' it will be bad, on 2840's I also tap out the port where the lube oil go's into the rear trans case ond screw in a 3/8 allen head pipe plug with a 5/16 orfice hole in it,,at this point in the 2840's life there is enough trans. wear to take more than it's share of oil, the orfice regulates a little more oil to the main pump..this sounds like a lot of 'stuff' to do , but I do a lot of them and this is my best plan of action..

changed the filter - it looks clean, and the oil in the filter housing wasn't "gritty" - it felt smooth and not discolored.

I played with the de-stroking screw on the pump. Winding it the whole way in seems to quieten the vibration a little, but it still vibrates. Interestingly, winding it out, for the first three turns there is some effort needed to unscrew it, and it reaches a point after that for the next 2 turns where it's almost effortless. I don't use it to start when cold - the block heater works great otherwise, so don't know how it "should" feel.

Thinking it might be a worn, original pump...

Screwing the de-stroking screw down should quieten the pump as it's not pumping any oil at this point as the pump is out of stroke. It's possible that the stroke control valve isn't seating correctly due to wear. I also agree that one of the metal lines that feed the hyd hi-lo or pto could be cracked. I would check the stand-by pressure and note if it's fluctuating.
