1944 JD A Governor issues and fan shaft issues

My fan recently quit spinning on me. Interestingly enough, it was right after I changed oil, I think. I know I didn't notice it the same day, but it was like a week later or something. Anyhow, I can spin the fan freely and the shaft spins also, this knowing the issue is inside the governor. Someone once told me that it's because the gear inside the governor moved over some, but everything it tighter than hell in there, so I don't understand. The teeth on both the fan gear and governor gear look ok.

Any ideas? I got the governor off the tractor and sitting in the back seat of my truck.

Thanks
Tim

I would first suspect the aluminum drive hubs for the fan if your tractor has them. If it doesn't then look into the rubber fan hub. I have seen a lot of them pretty badly worn in the splines. Usually the governor starts making a lot of noise before the gears get bad enough to actually fail to drive the fan. Put the governor upside down on a bench and lock the governor shaft with a C-clamp or whatever, and turn the fan. You should see your problem. If it's the fan drive hubs, they can be replaced with out pulling the governor. Since you already have the governor off I would check over the weights and bearings for excess wear. Good luck with it.

The fan shaft bevel gear on the govenor drive shaft is a press on fit you know. As far as side to side horizontal play and positioning of the govenors bevel gear to the fan shafts bevel gear to adjust gear mesh and backlash, thats adjustable by different thickness and number of shim gaskets under the big outer bearing end cap, be sure and adjust the mesh and backlash (need a good matched set regardless if new or a used pair) when the gears are re installed or its whine city..... Those pins that go through the weights and any wear or slop (pins to weights) can be critical for good steady smooth govenor action.

Like johndeereman said, my 50 John Deere A fan didn't turn when I bought it. I found it had sheared the key that turns the fan shaft.

Thanks to everyone that has responded. I took the governor off and found that the gear inside had shifted. Looks like it may have snapped a snapring inside. I work for a JD dealer and took it into our shop and had a techie look at it today.

The key on the fan shaft would have been great, but the fan and the gear at the opposite end both move together so, that cancels that idea.

Thanks again.
