3010 LP--"gas can"

One of these days I'm going to screw up and forget to check my propane level and strand my tractor somewhere. I almost did it a few weeks ago, ran out as I pulled up to the fill tank.

I remember from when I was a kid, we'd strand tractors ever so often and there was a place to hook up a 5 gallon bottle and run the tractor on vapor to get home to the big tank. Is this a kit or is it something cobbled together out of necessity? Next question, how would I do this to my 3010 LP? Tee into the vapor line from tank, with a ball valve on a hose leading out to hook to a 5 or 7.5 bottle?

Anybody been here done this, I'd appreciate some input before it gets to be an immediate problem!

Thanks,
Bill

The 2 cyls. had a place on them you could screw a hose right onto for this so I would imagine a 3010 should.

My 4020 operator's manual talks about that. Seems that's how Deere loaded and unloaded the tractors for shipping. Used a BBQ propane tank. The connection should still be there.

Checking the parts book and my 4020 op manual, the point of connection is at the strainer where the liquid line arrives from the liquid valve. There is a T there with a cap. 45 degree flare it says, but doesn't say what size.

So you need a BBQ or RV tank to regulator hose, that fits the tank's valve and it goes to a 1/4" inverted flare my RV parts catalog says. Then you need an adapter from that flare to the flare of the T. My local Ace Hardware has a lot of those fittings in the brass fittings drawers in a corner away from the BBQ tank hoses and regulators. Good auto parts stores have drawers full of brass fittings and adapters too.

That's how I'd get there. Don't have to take anything apart, just spin off the cap, with all the tank valves closed. Hook up the hose from the BBQ tank, turn on its valve, and run home on a little vapor, not fast because for an engine the size of of the 3010, you'd need about a 500 pound LP tank to evaporate vapor fast enough. Of course you might turn the tank upside down and run liquid to the converter if its still hot, and run home at full power.

Well, sir, you have answered my question fairly thoroughly. I'll check my 3010 for the same capped off fitting and go from there. Will have to run out of fuel before installing the setup though, as my vapor valve is not working--spins but otherwise does nothing. Had the hood off yesterday and the cotter pin is intact, the valve looks stripped out, but with 40% gas I'm not going to monkey with it. Gonna wait until it gets real low....probably run it out, then try out plumbing a 5 into it, then when I get it back to barn I'll pull that valve apart and see why it's not working.

Luck I have, it'll run out on a 30 degree Saturday afternoon where it has to set until Monday when the Carquest in Mathis opens. On top of that, Chuck'll be out of that particular fitting.

Thinking about leaving that line in, if I can find the fittings to put a valve up there and just shut that extra line off and dust-cap it, and leave it up under hood somewhere... that way if I run my house dry I can heat water off'n the tractor gas tank!
