We took it off and had it rebuilt for $70. No more clicking. Only thing is....is they painted it black and my girlfriends father couldn't stand it so he painted it back to it's original green. All is well.

Good to hear the rest of the story. My 2350 clicks once in a while when it has been started often. May go that route too.

I'm gonna have to pull the one off the 2040 as I just KNOW that sucker is gonna not start some day and leave me out to dry. It's been clicking for 3 years or more. Usually, I can just keep turning the key and she'll fire off eventually but it's worse in the winter/cold and that's when you need it the most (if we ever get a big snow again here in Va.).

You really need to pay attention to those warnings. That way it won't let you down.

If you happen to have one of those Deere's with a hi-lo or reverser tranny you can do MAJOR !! damage to them if you try to pull start it.

Yep, but it's a straight ole collar shift on the 2040. Roll started it many times. No harm. I'm getting to it. Just got other projects ahead of it. Like 4 other tractors and I don't keep it at my home. Makes it more difficult to get to and work on. This spring, I replaced all the hoses that run up to the Hyd. resevoir in front of the radiator because they were leaking and clogging up the radiator. New seat and changed Hyd oil and filter. I also fixed all the lights on it. Heck, I hardly use it at all. Has 2200 original hours and it's a 1982 model. Less than 100 hours a year. I use my B more than the 2040.

Don't have accurate figures to back me up, but..........I found that I could repair probably 75% of starters/generators/alternators that went 'bad'. What have you got to lose by taking it apart yourself? Unless it was one of those high-dollar cores, I usually found it better to keep the core (for parts), rather than return it for deposit. Of course, we had numerous tractors using the same parts and it might not work for a one-tractor operation.
