1963 4020 over heating

We got a new round baler last week, well new for us, it’s a 2002 5x6 New Holland. It calls for a min 80 hp tractor. Dad said he had trouble with the 4020 overheating Monday while trying out the baler. He said he had to stop under a tree and wait for it to cool down after each bale. What are the most common causes for a 4020 to have temp problems? We have noticed it seems to run hotter on low sulfur fuel but that’s all we can get nowadays. We are thinking we should have the radiator rotted out and change the thermostats. Any ideas or comments?

Dirty radiator or could have bad thermostats or a bad heat gauge. I would start with the radiator and while I had it off I would replace thermostats. Then go from there.

Could also be timed a bit wrong or have a rusted out water pump impeller or the impeller might be slipping on the shaft. I have had thermostats in my gas 4020 fail, so I'd be most suspicious of them. I test them in a pan of water on the kitchen stove with a thermometer in the water to check their operating temperature. I also check new ones before putting them in the engine.

First 4020 was a 1964 and I would do as you say. Have the radiator cleaaned and rodded out.

Dad said the 4020 was a 63 and the 4010 is a 61, I have never checked the serial numbers, just took his word for it, probably a 64 model.
I wonder if the injectors may be getting dirty or worn, it seems to run a lot richer than our 4010 does.
Dad said he plans to use the International 856 to finish baling this year and work on the 4020 this winter.
