1959 JD 630 Temperature Issues

I purchased a 1959 630 and I am in need of your assistance. Originally I thought the thermostat was sticking and causing the temperature to come up (I shut it down when it got above 200*F). When I opened it up there wasn't a thermostat in it. I then thought maybe the water pump impeller was slipping, but I pulled it out today and it was tight and appears to be in good shape. I checked for blockage in the lower hose and pipe and it was clear. I checked the upper pipe and it too was clear. The radiator and block don't appear to be clogged either. The radiator fins are clean and I can see through the radiator fins so I think it is ok. The radiator does have some signs that maybe the fan has gotten into it a some point but it is watertight. The fan belt is tight and doesn't appear to be slipping. It did run longer before heating up without the front hood on which makes me wonder about airflow or the fan itself. I am open to suggestions as to what to check next. This is my first Deere and don't want to mess it up. Thank you in advance for any advice you may have.

The first thing I would do is to put a thermostat in it. The thermostat helps slow the water down so that it has plenty of time to be cooled before going thru the engine again. You can get a "fin comb" to straighten those bent fins up. Unless an awful lot of the radiator is blocked, it shoul d still cool decently even with the blocked fins.
 
200F is not too hot if running 50/50 coolant and a pressure cap.
The temp indication maybe suspect. Pull the probe and dip into actively boiling water without letting the probe touch the bottom or sides of the water pot. Should read 210-212F.

Thank you for the replies, I will get a thermostat and put it in and see if that helps. Buickanddeere, I am running a 50/50 mix with a pressure cap. I thought that maybe the temp guage or probe were bad, but the upper pipe where the probe is located was hot enough that it would burn you. If anything I may be reading low so I will try your suggestion. What should the temp run if the tractor isn't working hard just going down the road with nothing hooked to it?

There can't not be a thermostat in a tractor with a water pump. When you you running a tractor this way, ALL of the water supply is heated evenly, and since it circulates continuously, it does not have a chance to be cooled down by the fan.

A 195F thermostat would be perfect for your application.
 
With the engine OFF grab the fan blade and try to rotate it. The slip clutch should take some decent pressure to turn it. If it spins real easy this may be the problem. Check the timing and check it for a leaky head gasket with a pressure tester and then run it or fill it up to the top and run it with cap off and look for it blowing out coolant.
My uncle had one overheating and even though the radiator cores looked good what you could see from the top and it wasn't really old it was clogged. I was able to back flush it from the bottom with water and an air hose mixed. Left the thermostat housing off so the junk had a place to go. You could see stuff come out and it helped it.

The fan blade takes quite a bit of force to get it to spin, so that seems ok. I will try back flushing the radiator and see if that helps. When I pulled the big plug at the bottom I was shocked at how much junk settled at the bottom of the container. If the flushing and thermostat doesn't help should I replace the radiator core? I'd try the flushing first. Like I said I used air pressure and water to help force it out and blowed it in at the bottom to back flush it. Also make sure the outside fins are good and clean and you can see through the spaces. Hold a light on the opposite side and look at it.
 
195F all the time after it's warmed up.
The previously mentioned worn fan friction disks are certainly something to look at.
It only takes a very thin layer of scum, scale or ick to reduce a rads cooling capacity.
 
Thank you all for the info. I will back flush with air and water until the water runs clean and then refill with a 50/50 mix. I bought a thermostat for it and will put it in before I refill it. Hopefully this solves this problem for me. Again thank you all for the help.
