1934 A Belt Pulley Cover Question

I am working on a 1934 A and I ordered one from a well known supplier and it arrived today. The new one has a dimple in the center and my old one does not. My old cover appears to be original but there's no way to know for sure. My questions is: did the original pulley covers have the dimple?

I'm going to say the old ones didn't have a dimple.Defineitly not positive. But that same size cover fits all the way up to the late ones and I think they had a dimple which is nice to check the RPM at.

Mike, I've always used the dimple in the end of the crank on the flywheel side to check RPMs. Guess either one will do as good as the other.

Flywheel side won't work on most models after 1947 they enclosed them and some have a pin across the end for a hand start adapter.

Is your 1934 "A" Serial number listed in Wes Malcolms Serial number and owners list?? Are you familiar with it?? I have an Unstyled "A" Serial number and owners list also with appox 4600 Serial numbers and would like to ADD as many US-A's to the list as possible. Feel free to call me with any questions, or e-mail,thank you, 1-586-864-7766.

DScott, I would have to look it up in a service bulletin to be sure but I don't think the dimple appeared until about 1951 or thereabouts. The dimple was placed there to insert a mechanical tachometer. No doubt your cover did not have the dimple. You were supplied with a generic replacement. Mike

David, I am familiar with Wes Malcolm's books but not his Serial number and owners list. Where/how do you access it? What's your email address?

Mike, That's what I suspected. I looked at a book of Unstyled A vintage pictures I have awhile ago and none of those had a dimple. I'll call around and try to find one tomorrow and if all of the new ones now have dimples I guess I could de-dimple this one. Do you know if anyone has the correct type in a repro?

Does anybody know of a good reproduction cover without the dimple? I've called all of my usual suppliers and they only have the later style covers with a dimple.
