i have a 51 jd a that i bought in boxes got it all together and it runs great only problem is i cant keep the flywheel on. looks like there is supposed to be a nut on the end of the crank? if so can i still get one from deere? or anyone else? thanks in advance johndeereman

You need to buy new bolts from Deere and get a flywheel wrench, torque those bolts down good and tight... very tight.

yes, there is a sheetmetal nut that goes on the end of the splines to set the endplay, it does NOT serve to hold it on, however.

I'll Echo what Rob said. I was having trouble keeping the flywheel still on a motor a couple years ago. Couple things to check.

1. Make sure there's no grease/oil on the crank or flywheel. A little "stickshun" is a good thing.
2. Make sure that you torque the bolts based on the grade of the bolt. Best bet is to get them from Deere and use the Torque spec in the book. Grade 8 bolts have different torque than grade 5. If you torque to the wrong spec, you'll either stretch the bolts or they'll be loose.
