JD 1214 haybine oil

I picked up this 1214 haybine for cheap and am going through it before using it. I want to change the oil in it. I know the manual says to use Hy-Gard, but my brother can get me chevron AW hydraulic oil for a heavily discounted price. I know it s not a transmission hydraulic oil like hy-gard, but it s also not running in a transmission, it s a pump and motor system.

Do these thing need special additives in hy-gard like a transmission, or is it just the oil of convenience since tractors run it anyway? Will regular hydraulic oil hurt anything

That has a piston pump and motor set up, doesn't it? I would use a UTHF meeting the J20C spec, there are less expensive options to HyGard.

Can you brother get a Chevron J20C equivalent at a "heavily discounted" price? Your machine, you can compare specs and do as you like.

I'd use the Chevron oil from your brother. That oil will probably last longer than the 1214 will be cutting hay. Crimper width on 1214 is very narrow compared to cutting width. I suggest you get some RC 60 coupler links if you don't have some.
