256 new holland rake

I pulled my rake out of the barn from its winter nap, and found it did not free wheel in reverse-in other words at least one of the 'clickers' is not functioning. It was fine last year-never an issue-. So I had to use it-had hay down-and it acted like a live axle in turns-one wheel spins and the other slips. Sometimes it would free up work normally, but mostly it did not. Any way I'm done with hay for now, and wonder what to expect is wrong within the ratchet /clicker/ assemblies. Thanks for any ideas and help, Mark.

Probably full of a mouse nest in the end of the axle ot it has broken springs. I've seen both problems.

When I took mine apart it was just gummed up with grease on one side that had made the little clicker stick open. I just disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, and added fresh grease. Works much better now.

They are easy to fix, the clicker spring might have broke or old grease gummed it up.

Take apart, clean and reassemble. The pawl and spring can be bought from NH. I replaced mine once already.

I figured out which wheel was causing the problem and so I took it apart, and basically the only thing in the housing was a tore up paw and some fragments. I knew there was a paw and spring in there, I guess I was expecting something more wrong. Thanks, Mark.
