Disc Mower Caddy

Anybody use a disc mower caddy? What are the good and bad points about using one. Good brands and ballpark prices. Thanks.

I have never used one but whenever the topic comes up here everyone loves them. I know that if I were still using a 3 point disc mower I would get a caddy.

I would never go back to using a disc mower mounted on 3 pt hitch after using the same disc mower on a caddy. Caddy/mower is much more easy to attach to tractor plus disc mower mounted on caddy will follow contour of ground better.

I own a Vasser caddy that has capability of changing height of disc mower 3pt attaching pins simply by moving scv control lever to operate a hyd cylinder.

My caddy has offset wheel/tires which requires caddy tires to slide a little in turns. Other than slightly accelerating tire tread wear I can't determine any other downfalls of my caddy.

Some newer model caddies have tires/wheels spaced evenly across from each other for easier turning.

Buy a trail mower and ditch the caddy and mower. The trail mower will be better and cost about the same as the pair. I bought a good Kuhn GMD313TG MULTIDISC MOWER used and still good shape that was 5 yers ago. Price was $8500. I have had zero problems with it.

I have a Kuhn 2850 trailed mower and love it, also have a Kuhn 3 pt disc mower that will continue to set in the shed until we purchase a caddy to mount it on
Some mowers require a hydraulic lift attachment on the caddy to operate properly
I like the Cutter Caddy made by Durabuilt but see a lot of KM brand in my area

I say save your money. Just seems like a lot more moving parts and expense to achieve what the mower already does on the 3pt.

I see a potential use for one if you have a too light tractor/ low 3pt capacity or don't have a 3pt hitch.

The fact that the companies that make mowers don't make caddies and the pull type mowers they do make aren't a 3pt mower set up on a caddy sticks out to me.

I mount & dismount 3pt disc mower almost daily during haying and I don't have extendable links either. Parking stands and dedicated toplink saves time. Only takes a few minutes on or off.

I'd trade 3pt mower on a dedicated trailed model if you want away from 3pt.

Got an Ogden. Didn't really choose that brand, it was the only one close when I bought it.

I'll never go back to using the 3 point mount.

So much easier to hook up. Takes the weight off the back of the tractor.

About like mowing with a haybine.

Some caddys are fixed in height. Mine came with it's own set of 3 point arms, so I do need the second hyd remote. 1 for the mower, 1 for the caddy. Again,
really wasn't looking for that feature, but glad I have it. Have a couple creeks to get across, lets me raise it up for clearance.

Googled them. Looks like they haven't got any cheaper. I wouldn't be afraid of a used one if you can find one for the right price, not that much to go wrong
with them.

What "moving parts?" There are two wheels and a PTO shaft. It adds minimal complexity to the mower, but makes it so much more convenient to hook and unhook.

I bought a Vicon 8020 mower on a KMC 4750 caddy at an auction early this year. Takes all of 30 seconds to hook up. Drawpin, single hydraulic hose, PTO shaft.

Mowing, it's awesome. The mower tracks perfectly behind the tractor, across side hills, around corners, etc..

Transporting, it's a little sketchy. The mower sits 12' tall raised up, hanging most of the weight off the right hand side. You have to take it easy around left hand corners with the mower raised.

Turns out the 4750 is the wrong caddy for this mower. It should be mounted on the larger 4760, and have the optional counterweight. I plan on adding a few wheel weights on a bracket before next May when haying starts again.

The other thing I found out was that the mower is mounted too low on the caddy. The manual says the mower frame should be 20" off the ground, but it's only 14" on the caddy. That would explain why it is so heavy on the ground. I could swear I measured it and it was 20" but now it's only 14" so I don't know where I went wrong.

Got it at Sheffield Farm & Equipment. They build them. Really good guy. Located in Glasgow, KY. Price was right also. Not trying to get rich just make a living. Would recommend them highly. They also build other types of equipment.
