what are the specs of a JD 44 plow

44 JD plows were made from 1945 to 1957,
tractor drawn with 10,12,14 and 16
width of cut per bottom, 2 bottoms. So,
Depending on what plow you have would
determine what tractor you would need.
You can go to JD's site, parts,
Agricultural then type in 44 and search.

If you go to John Deere's web site, you
can view the manual as well, I just
checked. It will tell you all you want to
know about set up and using one.

I had a 46 B same engine as your tractor. Deere rated them as a 2-14 plow tractor but in actuallity no more than 2-12' or better a single bottom. I pulled a JD No 52 2-12 with mine and was in low gear all the time. Unless you have very easy working ground look for a small frame version that was for 2 10 bottoms or 2 12 Inch bottoms but they are very rare. Next is the mediuem frame that is for 12 inch or 14 inch bottoms and make sure it has the 12 inch bottom, then there is the large frame that seems to be more common that is 14 inch or 16 inch and no way would yor tractor pull one of them. The medieum frame I had set of 14 inch was plenty for the larger 49 model B tractor and it had the high compression pistons in the engine. Then there are hydrolic lift for power troll that unless your tractor has been converted over you do not have as power troll was not yet built for your tractor so that leaves the clutch-rope lift plow. For your tractor look for a John Deere 51 plow that would be the age of your tractor and fit the horse power of your tractor. You should be able to habdle a 14 inch bottom with it but depending on your siol that nay be too much plow for your tractor. And remember those plows were made with the blacksmith sharpen shares that are verry hard to get and as i understand now around $200 per share. Now the plow could have been converted to the newer blade-throwaway type share that may also now be getting hard to get. Your tractor would be the about 20 PTO HP model, the late model was about 28 PTO HP and 2-12 was a good match for it. I figured for a 12 inch bottom about 13 horsepower minnimum and a 14 bottom at least 15 HP per bottom. You get uo to a 16 inch bottom 20 HP per bottom and I have had all those size plows.
