JD 24T Crank Removal

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has pulled the main crank from a 24T without removing the gear case and crank assembly from the baler? I'm getting a 24T field ready for next year and the crank journal for the pitman is severely worn and out of round. I've got a couple of spare gear cases and cranks, and would just swap the crank if that was possible. Thanks!

I removed the crank from a 214T and don't remember removing the case, but that was more than 50 years ago. Had the crank rebuilt. Lesson learned was you can't over grease the crank bearing.

I did that once.

The gear is quite a tight press fit on the crankshaft.

WHY don' you want to do it the easy way and swap the gearcase and crank as an assembly?

DITTO change complete gearcase assembly

Thanks guys for the input. I kind of figured that the whole assembly would be the easier route, but wanted to check before doing that.

The No. 5 is going to go on this baler. Finally got it into the shop and stripped down but there's a lot of plungerhead and pitman arm slop to deal with. I should be able to shim the plungerhead back to spec, and was hoping that it was just a worn bushing for the crank, but it's just too worn to work with. Luckily I've parted out several 24Ts and have parts at hand to use.

IMHO JD 224 were advanced to model 24 similar to how 346 was advanced over 336. 224 had side hay compressing doors in bale case that 24 didn't have. 224 had roller brgs to support plungerhead vs metal blocks that have a history of breaking attaching bolt & getting lost while baling

I have two 24t's, 224t and two 214t's. The newest 214 has rollers on the plunger like the 224. The 224 has an extra bar in the pickup. Tom
