Here is some pictures of what I was talking about in my first post

This one is of the pickup strap. It had a bolt in it that seemed like it was there to keep it from going up which made it impossible to put into the transport position. I don t know if it s there to keep it from bouncing up or what. If you look at my first post I said that it doesn t take much to pick it up so I don t know if that s there to keep from going up or what, but I don t think it should be there.

This one is of the place on the baler where the pto shaft attaches, in my other post I said that the seller bent it pulling it out of the barn. I may try to just get another pto shaft for it but this part almost looks bent. It might be supposed to look that way I don t know.

That's not what I would call the PTO shaft but terms are different in different areas. I'm guessing it might be the pilot for the slip clutch. A picture from a bit further away so get a better view of its entirety might help.

Here is a link to the PTO clutch page in the online 273 parts book. It may be item key# 2.

Here is a link to the index of the 273 online parts book, so you can find the part, and others you might need, for certain.

if yours is a short tongue, if the pto shaft is still connected to the tractor while sliding the tongue to "transport" something is gonna break. For short tongue 273 the PTO shaft has to be separated from the tractor, and placed on that carrier before choking the tires & sliding tongue with tractor. Been there done that

(quoted from post at 15:54:44 10/13/22) should I replace it? What exactly is that piece?

According to Messick's parts diagram, that's called a "Clutch Pilot"

It is replaceable. It does not go through to connect to the gearbox.

The end of your PTO shaft is probably OK. That Clutch pilot is not.
You want that straight. Any wobble will stress the PTO. Wobble of that shaft will also stress the bearings on your tractor's PTO output.

Unless it's straightened perfectly, any money you save now will be spent in the future on PTO shafts... bearings in your tractor's back end... etc.

Mechanically, the easiest way to replace it is to find an old 273 and get the entire short PTO assembly complete from a scrap baler (essentially just remove the three bolts that connect the whole shebang to the flywheel). Then you'll have a good pilot and a spare PTO to boot.

The clutch pilot new is 470 bucks or so from Messick's... so there is your price comparison, if you go scrap shopping.

Good luck.
