New Holland 273 baler issues

I just bought a new holland 273 and the person I bought it from bent the pto shaft pulling it out. He said you could take it to a machine shop and they could bend it back but I have read some stuff that says that could be dangerous to heat it because that could weaken if I guess. I don t know if I should do that or if I should just buy a new one. Also, the pickup, according to my reading, should just fall to the ground pretty much and kindve float over the ground. I think there is a spring you adjust that makes if more or less heavy. I think the manual says the pickup wheel should have 25-30 lbs on it. Right now it just more less just stays where you put it and to get the wheel on the ground you about have to push it down. It looks like some one has put a bolt in the piece that you put the pin in when it s raised, to hold it down. I am guessing the spring needs loosened but I could be totally wrong. Any help with both issues is appreciated.

If it has been setting it maybe just stiff from setting. Try putting some used engine oil on the pivot and work it up and down some it may loosen up and work right. As for the PTO shaft you could try just pressing it straight. I would have probably told him he owed me a new shaft since he bent it that way or cut the price down some like about $500.00 for the shaft. If you press it straight it will have to go just a hair past straight so it can stay there. Expect it to always probably have a slightly tight spot ever after. Keeping it well greased will help with it sliding too.

I don't know how you could ever get it bent back in exactly the same spot at the correct angle so that it will telescope. You will remove one bend and put in another, then it will put a load on your tractor's PTO shaft and ruin the bearing in five hours.

My pickup on my 270 has been about as stiff as yours for decades. The vibration of running and it falls down to the wheel being on the ground. About perfect. I would
leave that until Im using it and see if its right as is.

The pto, it needs to slide very free and easy, if bent it is shot, wont ever get it straight and true. Some machinists are Miri all workers and might actually get it, but time
and money involved....
