Repair shops generally don't exist to lose money.

The price of a new part is entirely irrelevant to what you were charged.

If they did a quality repair without gouging on parts or labor you have nothing to complain about.

Ever run a repair shop and tried to make a living?

These days you may not be able to find a new one for twice that price. But at the very least I am guessing next time you will ask for an estimate.

Generic cylinder or something unique? I dropped a unique one off that I thought just needed resealed once. Turned out it needed serious work. Found a different cylinder.

Had two steering cylinders repaired on a 4 wheel drive 90 horse tractor at a hydraulic shop in Bryan Texas. Charged me 471$
and i was very happy with them as replacing them was several hundred dollars each. Special cylinders that i would have had
to go to a dealer to replace. This was on a 23 year old SAME tractor

Well, there is that. Or...they don't get my business at all because I learn to repair the stuff on my own. Running a repair shop is a judgment call. You can do everything at one hourly price and try to weasel every cent out of every patron and then risk customers feeling ripped off and not coming back (a return customer is a happy customer) ... Now try to run a repair shop (and make a living) with only new customers at every visit. Sooner or later you run out of happy people... OR you can treat every job differently and charge people according to the time and energy involved, that doesn't have to be a set hourly rate either. Case in point... a local welding and general repair shop I frequent... he might sometimes charge me $10 for twenty minutes of really easy welding, or he might charge me $40. Either way I feel he is fair so I go back. The last time I was in there he didn't charge me at all for welding a heavy piece that I had already tacked together with my 115v mig. He said he'll get me next time...and he will.

Yeah... as the birth rate in the US drops, the businesses that use the "There's a sucker born every day" philosophy run out of suckers quickly. Then... they have to resort to working for either the insurance industry or the government, where they force large numbers of people into being suckers...
