Hesston 1071 haybine drive wheel sliding

Where the PTO shaft comes in at the front of the machine, there's a 2-grove sheeve / pulley that drives the belts.
On mine, the sheave slides forward towards the PTO u-joint, moving the belts out of line and throwing them off.
I can't see anything that would hold that sheeve from sliding backwards and forwards on the drive shaft, even in the parts diagram.
What's meant to keep that in place?

Probably a press fit with Key. Push it as far both ways as possible and clean with brake clean or carb spray and let dry. Use locktite sleeve and bearing retaining fluid on the shaft/pulley then position it. follow the directions as to cure time. Jim

Gib key is supposed to keep it in place. But after a while things can tend to get worn and move around, seems to especially happen once you have had to remove that sheave for whatever reason/repair. Also if you run the mower with the head lifted much it tends to make this worse no matter what. They changed that setup with the 11XX series. The sheave is on the back side of the gearbox.

What we did for our 1091 is to put a hose clamp front and back of the sheave, if you can get one in back. I'd have to look to be sure there is a clamp behind ours - can't remember. I know we put a new sheave on but only helped a short while. Paul

If they could put a hose clamp in there I would cut a pipe bushing and put on either side or both to hold it tight with a new tighter key and make the key a wee bit larger so it has to be pushed on with a press or driven on with a pipe over the shaft and then the bushings to keep it aligned.

The other posters that said a gib key is used are correct. I fought with mine too. I ended up getting a new pulley, and gearbox shaft, as the keyways were wore out on the originals. I got them from the dealer and they were surprisingly reasonably priced. I'm not sure if they're still available. That' was probably 10 years ago and have never again had a problem with it

Thanks so much for the helpful comments!
I will try loctite, hammer the gib key in tight, and the hose clamps. If that doesn't work, I will drill and tap it!
Seems like an odd design, the PTO shaft end has some retaining screw in there, but not that pulley.
