Vermeer 504H big spring replacement

One of the big tension springs on my baler broke at the hook end yesterday. Any tips on getting that back on would be appreciated. I'm thinking a chain with a comealong to pull it back up. Before we got it someone had fixed the other one at the hook end with a cable and cable clamps. Would it release more tension if I unhook lift cylinders and lift it with a chain hoist? I'd like to just buy a new spring, does anyone know where I might pick up a used one? Also noted that there are holes to add a spring to each side. Would that give me more tension on my bales? Email should be open, thanks.

I had a 605H and had the same problems.

Heated the last turn of the spring up with a cutting torch and bent it up to form a new hook.

Used a cable come a long slung over top of the baler to pull the spring.

Once pulled up to where I needed it I installed a clevis with the clevis bolt going through the hole in the arm on the baler.

This made attaching the spring much easier and at the same time it made up for the length lost from the piece that broke off.

If your 504H is the same set up as the 605H the bale tension is controlled by a closed circuit hydraulic cylinder on the front of the baler.

Used the baler like that for a few thousand more bales before I parked it.

Heated the spring and made another hook on it. Cable puller hooked to it did the job. I have a bearing squealing but can't tell where it is. I know it's not any of the outside ones cause I drilled small holes in them and grease them with a needlepoint grease tip. I'm thinking it might be the hardest ones to get to inside the chamber on that tension arm. Going to pull chain and see if I can find it.

You may have heard this before, if you have or get one of those cheap little infrared thermometers (the ones with the laser pointer) at the end of the day it only takes a minute to do a quick scan at the ends of the rollers to spot a bearing that is running warmer than it should be.

I have one of those, I check everything with it. I'm pretty sure it's one of those inside ones on the tension arm. I haven't determined how much of a job it is to get to them. I may be able to undo everything attached to it and roll it up out of the bale chamber. May just sell it and buy another one. I'm gettin tired of working on things.
