Leroy- markers

You asked about markers. We do use them
here. Some guys put furrowers on their
planters.Some guys make furrows(water
marks) and then plant upon the
beds.Follow the corresponding set of
furrows.So I have markers(scribes)on my
planter and my furrowing bar. That way we
can plant straight rows on either smooth
ground,or on top of beds.

I prefer to make the furrows(prebed)before I actually plant.Works well for me and my small operation. It does take more time But I get a better seedbed.Big operators Don not prebed because it is an extra trip across the field. When planting on prebedded fields I leave the markets up.

We dont do raised beds or any of that up here, but I thought I was the last person left not running gps and no more markers at all...... hardly need a steering wheel I guess, nothing to do but ride along and eat chips.

Ha ha.

The BTOs use GPS,but I don't run in their circles, nor they in mine. My'GPS' is a tree or fence post on the horizon.LOL!

Some other differences you the operation is if you are on sandy ground or heavy clay. Sand will flow to just about any shape to plant on. Clay needs a bit more working to get a nice seedbed. And we just hope to get it flat enough to cut close to the surface for beans and corn is not so much a concern. I do leave sod waterways to prevent washing during heavy rains and during the winter/spring melt off.

I was just telling the previous poster don't buy something without a row gide system for planting and expect to go out and plant straigh same width rows without a marking system and what I have seen from unit planters they are not made with a row marking system. Just did not want him to get something that would not work for him. I did have a Ferguson tool bar planter but the tool bar came with markers mounted but just take a plain tool bar and bolt on unit planter units without a barking system probably would not work. I never used that Ferguson planter, just saved it fron scrap yard for show. Ferguson colector now has it.
