NH 455 Knife Head

Greetings,

I have (well, father-in-law has actually) a New Holland 455 sickle mower, early serial #.

The knife head broke, likely due to a worn out bushing. As noted in many posts on this forum and extensive web searches, the replacement part is NLA. Later serial numbers appear to use the same knife head as NH 456 mowers which is readily available.

So, has anyone tried using the newer 456 knife head with an older 455 mower? Can it be modified to work? I have not been able to find any guidance on this. I did come across a kit to update the pivot drive of a 455 to a 456 which would presumably make the newer knife head compatible, but that is cost and effort prohibitive for such an old mower.

Any advice is most welcome.

Thanks for the advice. I contacted Webbs and they confirmed the newer part should work on the older mower. I'll get that on order!

I'll maybe do some practice welding on the old one too...

Learning to weld on a drive head is not the best idea unless you like the work. Practice on a couple plates welding. Welding up a hole with a welder is also not the best place to practice either. you want the hole to be welded such it can be machined out to fit a new bushing. The bushing wants to fit your bolt/pin then bore the hole to fit the bushing. This way the bushing is tight in the hole and it does not hammer with the motion of the knife.
