Hesston 5530 Baler twine

I bought a Hesston 5530 that appears to be in good condition, but I haven't used it yet (never used any round baler ...)
The manual states to use 4000ft twine, so I got 4000/440 but the stuff is as thick as rope and the spool won't even fit in the twine box.

I thought round balers used thinner twine - they're not even big round bales. Do I have to go hunt down some 4000/350 or am I misunderstanding something fundamental here?

Twine numbers can be confusing. Most round balers use 16,000 ft twine which weighs about 40.00 Lb per package.

That makes more sense to me ... just confused by what it says in the manual. Did they use to make 4000 ft mini-rolls of the thinner twine when the manual was printed, but not now? The twine box seems pretty small. Quotes below from manual:

TWINE SYSTEM
The bales are wrapped with twine when the desired size is reached. A twine box holding two 4000-foot balls is located in the tongue of the baler. See figure 6. The twine feeds through an opening in the lid, between the twine tension plates, and down through the twine tube to the front of the baling chamber. A pull rope moves the twine tube to accomplish wrap- ping and cutting the twine. See Preparation for twine threading.

TYPE TWINE USED
Baler or binder twine made of either sisal or plastic may be used with equal success; however, when baling crops that result in a tightly compressed bale, more wraps of binder twine will be required than when using the standard baler twine. Load and thread the twine or install a new ball per Twine Threading.

If you have a small twine box the 110 twine can be purchased in a carton of two 10,000 ft. balls, instead of the 20,0000 ft. balls for large twine boxes.

Ive never seen a 4000 foot ball that wasnt the big twine but that doesnt mean there wasnt at one time . The 20,000 roll is less than half the size of the 4000

Heres a box with 2 balls of 20,000 ft 110 strength, the box is
17 inches wide so each ball is max 8 1/2 in diameter & 8 1/2
tall. Thats pretty small to me

I think that the key word in the baler manual is that 'binder' twine may be used. It came in smaller balls and is a smaller diameter twine. More like the 16,000 round bale twine. I have a 5530 and 16,000 works very well. Each ball of 16,000 will make about 40-45 rolls the way I thread in on.

Good simple balers. Fairly easy to work on when they need it.
