JD #5 Sickle Mower

Pinch

New User
I just bought an old JD #5 (see images) and need to pick it up. Will it fit in the back of a mid-sized pickup truck?

If you detach the cutter bar (EASY if the pins aren't stuck) it will fit in a smaller space than that!

I'll bet a model 5 sickle mower will fit in pickup bed with cutter bar attached & in transport position with transport rod attached to bar holding bar in vertical position.

I will fit in a midsize PU easy.
If you leave the bar up, make sure you tie it well so it does not blow over.

Yes I'd take cutter bar off before even trying to load. Also ask for mounting brackets, might save some work if you have a similar tractor.

Thanks guys. It fit no problem. Any idea where I can find a cheap manual? I checked Ebay and they want $90! I can't figure out how to connect it to a tractor. Thanks again

What manual are you looking for, there's Operator's Manuals on fleabay for less than $20, and the parts catalog that shows parts drawings of the parts needed to attach the mower to various tractors can be viewed FREE.

BTW, what tractor are you planning to attach it to?

I'm looking for the owner's manual and I can't find one for less then $87.00. I want to mount it to a JD950 circa 1980.

Original Operator's manual.... $12.71, ebay 114923595910.

Aftermarket reprint... $12.97, ebay 163185723109.

Of course, the manuals were never updated past the late 50's (or thereabouts) and won't include mounting info for your "950".

Did you look at the mounting parts drawings at the link I posted?

If your mower is the later style with mounting clamps it can be attached to a mounting bar fabbed up to fit between the 3-point arms.

Another way to adapt a #5 to 3-point use.

There is a FREE down load of the Operator's Manual for the No. 5 at the JD Ag publications site (https://techpubs.deere.com/)

Click Equipment Publications. Change "Model Search" to "Part # / Keywords" , them enter OMH10156 in the search box and Search. That should download the manual for you to save to yourcomputer or device.
