NH 54A thrower on a NH 276 Baler? Let's find out...

My wife and daughter helped me, along with three point rigging. We got the thrower mechanism itself moved over.

The rigging worked really well. We used a come-a-long on each side and I temporarily mounted a pully to the crossbar of the loader. We used the rope to control the angle of the thrower.

Removed the pulley on the end of the driveshaft in order to free up the bracket on top of the thrower.

Side benefit is I figured out why this thrower is sometimes breaking the twine on bales. The pivots on the top and bottom are worn... so the thrower dips a little bit. That must be causing the top thrower belt to really put a lot of pressure on the bales and dig into the twine.

Anyway. So far, so good.

I'll spread the pics out in a comment or two.

Thanks for the offer... I'm good for throwers. I "think" this 54a that I took off of our 269 will work on our 276. I'm going to part outtge 269 when I'm done. I have a froend that can use some of the parts to keep his 269 going.

Wouldn't it have been easier to take six bolts out and put the puller right on the hub? Figured you would have bent the pulley before getting hub to move.

Good point. I didn't pull too hard. though. There was a little room behind the hub. So I used a socket and hammer to drive the hub back onto the shaft. Applied penetrating oil to the exposed shaft. And used a small file to make sure the keyway didn't have any burrs, and to clean up the end of the shaft.

After that, the gear puller easily pulled the pully forward...but not quite off.

I did about three cycles of this... always putting a little bit of penetrating oil on the exposed shaft either behind or in front of the pully. The last time, it popped off easily. No pully bending required.

I honestly never thought about removing the sheaves and spacer discs.

Maybe next time...

So, I moved over the 54A throwers pully and drive shaft assembly to the 276 that I'm mounting it on.

I appears that I'm going to need to move everything over to the left three inches and shorten the shaft by 6-3/4".

I double checked by looking at the 58 thrower on my other 276. That seems to be the big difference.

I'll also need two new belts to account for the longer distance.

It's really obvious when you look at the front cowl around the plunger flywheel and compare.

This extra space gets the thrower's drive shaft out of the way of the tine bar gearbox/ pickup/ knotter input sprocket assembly on the 276.
