NH315 Knotter problem

Hello.
NH 315 Baler - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Had a drive yoke failure, and thought it wise to rebuild the knotters. It was tying decently before, with little failures (maybe 1 failure out of 500), but the pinions and worm screw were badly worn; the roller was more square than round, and the fingers (or more precisely the finger holders) had pretty much disintegrated. I also replaced the bill hooks (mainly because of the bill hook tongues), and replaced a complete knotter frame, as I cracked it trying to get the bill hook pinion off.

When I came to bale hay, it missed knotting at a much higher rate than before. It now missed maybe 1 out of 40 bales.

I thought I checked and adjusted everything correctly: gap between knife arm and bill hook, disc timing, etc.
The missed knots seem to be either right or left. Sometimes the knot hangs on the bill hook, sometimes the bill hook seems to be wrapped with twine (I use 9000 poly twine).

I am now wondering if the spring tension of the twine holder is excessive??? The twine seems to be jammed in the disc when I look at it right now (not sure that is typical though).
No hay to test any further...managed to get the hay in last night before it rained. I would have to use loose, dried hay.

Did you buy the correct bill hooks when you replaced them? New Holland has different billhooks and pinions for sisal vs plastic twine. Not sure what the differences are.

Aye, With some difficulty I found the correct Bill Hooks for poly twine.

(quoted from post at 11:39:06 09/14/21) Might be a lot less painful to buy some sisal twine. I like sisal better anyways.

No, sorry, I meant I have the POLY TWINE version of the bill hooks installed. It's with POLY twine and POLY bill hook I am having this problem.

Pig, I hate to state the obvious but go ahead and back off the twine tension spring say a half turn and see what happens. I was just thru this with my NH baler. The right knotter was missing frequently, especialy when I would crank the baler chamber tension down. Turns out the twine holder tension spring was cracked. Was hard to tell by looking. Became evident once I loosened the spring all the way. I bought a new one for $13 and knotter runs like a champ.

Thanks SHALER, yeah, I will try this with backing off the spring tension.
The really odd thing was that the right knotter had TWO springs installed!?!

pig, I have a 273 new holland that hasnt missed in three years over..

THAT BEING SAID.. it was missing every 10th before I went through and using the manual went from start to finish IN ORDER and adjusted the knotters.. It took me three attempts to get it right.. even though I did it right..

You prob already know this but dont cheat.. the manuel specifies certain things in order of adjustment you do a, b, and c.. not b, a, and c.. good luck

You know, I bet you are right!
Will take the time one day [soon] and sit down and go through it again, slowly, methodically, and step-by-step...

Cheers.
