New Idea 5208 question

What is the pod gear backlash adjustment spec? I saw it once in my manual but with tired eyes I just can't seem to locate the specification
Thanks

I'm not coming up with a New Idea 5208 - there is a 5209 pull-type mower/conditioner and a 5408 3-point mower but I'm not finding a 5208. Either way, if your mower uses the same cutterbar as what all New Idea mowers did in the early 2000's the backlash should be .005 to .020 at a 1.7 radius which would basically be at the edge of the disc drive hub. There are several .005 and .010 shims under the rotor hub that can be used to set the correct backlash.

Thanks Brendon...my error ...it's a 1994. 5209..I'm its second owner. The unit has always been shedded..even during the 'haying' season and maintained religiously regarding greasing the pods...which is quite a pain. However, I'm afraid the pod gears are a bit worn, as I doubt I could get the gear backlash within the spec you provided.... even after removing the shims... but I'll try. Thanks again

I am curious as I have the same machine for about 10 years now. It is starting to not cut as well for 2nd and 3rd cut grass that is wet. I mow in the evening and there will always be dew. Anyway, I am thinking I need to go thru the entire cutter bar. I went thru it when I bought it and found a couple bearings with too much slop. I suppose the pinion gears might need to be shimmed too. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Suggested knife usage and guidelines....section
If the grass is light and wet use a standard 12 degree knife. ..and
Slow disc speed down, maintain ground speed, raise curtin, change cutter bar angle and essentially keep knives in good shape.

I cut my 1st, 2nd, 3rd at the same height..about 2.45 inches and use a file on the knives just before cutting light wet stuff. and use 12 degree knifes on everything. I rarely, if ever, operate my 5209 above 430RPM
My unit is in the rather worn category. While the paint is in excellent shape ..the little devil has traveled many acres in its rather long productive life. The backlash is rather pronounced/out of spec and requires some innovation on my part to keep the knives from hitting other knives, etc..... during row end turns... I replaced the hex shaft about 10 years ago... I wish now I replaced the drive and driven gears in the pods.
Good Luck
