Best Vermeer 4x5 Round Baler

Been gauking at some round balers, including Vermeer.

Short of a new one - what were the best 4ft wide x 5 ft diameter models from Vermeer? Any models to absolutely
avoid?

Thanks!
Bill

"Best" is relative, and subjective. The best for one operation wouldn't be the best for all. And obviously, technology changes through the years. What age or price range are you looking at? Dry hay, silage, stalks, etc....? 100 bales per year or 2000 per year?

I have seen it mentioned more than once that the J was one of their best balers. Not sure why, but I know a lot of people share the same opinion. I haven't seen many though. For me, only doing 100 bales per year of dry hay, my SI is just about perfect. Starts a bale every time, decent density throughout, and I've yet to see a wind row that it won't swallow up. But this was in MY price range. Yours may differ.

i had a 554XL. Makes a 48 x 66 bale. Like the 5 1/2 ' bale better than the 5'. Literature at the time claimed 17% more hay per bale than the 5'. Mine was twine only. Have heard the net wrap system was a bit tempermental. people were always amazed at the size of the bale that came out of that small machine. i traded up to a 504N I believe it was. Only kept it one year. After having the 5 1/2 ft bale the 5' seemed tiny. Bit the bullet and moved up to a 6640 rancher to get back to the 5 1/2 ' bale. This really doesn't answer your question, but 554Xl is a good baler and a cheaper models were the 5400 rebels and there are newer ones called the 5420 or 10. Happy hunting

A few questions. Are you going to sell them and what is the market. Around here 4x4 will bring the most money for the amount of hay. Feeding you want the bigger bale so you have fewer of them to handle.
Since our balers are both 20 plus years old I don't know if I can be very much help on best baler. I do see a variety around here with most being Deere balers. There are a few New Holland's, a Claas or Krone not sure without looking which. We have been using a couple one is a 484 New Idea the other is an IH of the New Idea design in a 5x6. I would depending on whether your state is like MI a communist one where they will not accept hay loads as an oversize with 2 5 foot bales wide and say it is divisible so only one bale wide as many as your trailer is long. The 4x? will load better for hauling with the width and again if selling the smaller the better for the money if selling by the bale. Of course if by the ton then other than legalities for width by all means the bigger is better. I realize this is a bit off your question but still things to consider before buying.

I run a 5x4 JD 375 string and like it because I can see around the bales when hauling on the FEL and the bale size fits my equipment and my customer's equipment. The nice thing about a 4x5 is that it fits in the back of a PU and just rolls out for unloading. A 5x4 you would have to pull out.

I agree with Caterpillar guy in there's a much larger percentage of JD rd balers utilized to bale hay where I live than all other hay baler brands combined. JD rd balers can auto wrap bale starting at 3ft in diameter. My previous JD rd baler(twine only) I traded had 30,000 bales on monitor & present JD rd baler(twine & net)has 28,700+ on bale monitor. Present baler will be in field baling later today

Our JD dealer situation has changed over the last 5 years or so. We had 3 very good independent dealers within striking distance sell out to
franchise/mega dealer owned stores. Same has happened with New Holland too. However we have a small independent dealer that carries Vermeer
and like the old independent JD dealers, will go the extra mile to support a small farm like ours. Thats why Im interested in Vermeer.

Only thing I need local JD dealer for is for the occasional part that wears out. Parts required are also readily available online. None of my my JD rd balers have ever required a dealer technician to even look at them.

As MJMJ says, best is a relative term. that said Bill, two things. #1, i have seen your posts over the years and have a sense of your operation. #2- I have driven around some parts of VA and am mildly surprised how many Vermeer balers there are. Soooooo, to opine on your question , the best 4 foot Vermeer baler FOR YOU would be the REBEL series (5400,5410,5420). Get a net wrap kit, goes without saying. With the size etc of your operation, cant think of a single drawback, EXCEPT in your area dont even think about getting a steal on one. Pay a fair price for a tight, lower count baler and you wont look back.
