Picked up a 1955 Winco pto generator today. Worked ok and after a few minutes having it home it made a loud bang with smoke. I think it is a field coil blew. What let go looks like a double A battery with a wire coming off of it. It seems these parts are no longer supported by Winco or WinPower.

Anyone know if a replacement part? It does say 220 vdc on the side of the part that blew. I dont know why it blew either and dont want to run it until I get this part.

Conditions at the time of running were 540 rpm pto speed and no load. Generator had been sitting for I would say 5 years.

What you describe doesn't sound like field coils. It sounds more like a diode, or such. I know nothing about it, but our resident expert, Billy Shafer, just posted his phone number elsewhere on this site. Your item may have taken on moisture over the years, and that precipitated a little explosion.

Im not 100% sure what you have but with the limited description, it sounds like it could be a capacitor. They tend to dry up over the years and they do explode it left unused for many years then voltage is abruptly applied. You mentioned it said 220 VDC. Many capacitors are rated in VDC. If it also has a uF number, it is a capacitor. If it also has plus (+) and a minus(-), you have an electrolytic capacitor that is polarity sensitive and must be replace paying attention to polarity. Hard to say if anything else is wrong but you may luck out by just replacing the capacitor, if that is in fact what you have.
