Hello Experts!
Before I begin, I will answer the question. Yes I have the John Deere 290 planter Operators Manual.
I have read it.

I have a few questions.
I have set the planter up to drill seeds.
1. The book fails to show just where the Drill Shaft shifter settings are, How is it set for position 2, position 3 and position 4?

2. What planter plates are you using to drill sweet corn seed?

3. When the manual talks about the 6 point sprocket, 13 point sprocket and Special 15 point sprocket, Where is the position of these sprockets on the planter?
Thanks,
Mike

Well I figured out the Drill shaft settings are. I took a scrub brush and knife to the casted piece that the Drill shaft knob goes down onto. And I found numbers 2, 3, and 4 on the casting! So I figured that part out. And I got some sweet corn planted.

The plate you use depends on the size of the seed. Different varieties are different sizes, and even the same variety can vary from lot to lot. Also, it depends on whether the seed is rounds or flats. Most seed companies will offer suggestions as to which plate to use, but not all. Sometimes the only way to know is to sprinkle a few seeds into the hopper and see how they fit.

The optimal plate will pick up one seed per hole, but that isn't always possible. If the plate picks up two seeds once in a while, it's not a big deal, but too often and you'll need to adjust to a lower number. If some of the seed is too big to fall into the holes, you need a bigger plate, because those seeds won't plant.
