Flail mower opinions and advice.

I've never owner nor used one. My bush hog sq72 is getting long in the tooth so I'm considering a replacement. I cut only twice a year in the areas that are too small or marginal for much else. Native grasses and weeds combined with the wild cherry and autumn olive saplings that arise. Mostly 2" or less diameter. Along the edges there will be tree limbs that fall but again, mostly small and frequently rotten. That said, I'm entertaining a flail vice rotary.

I'd be interested in hearing from folks that have and use them with particular input on good, solid brands. Do you prefer hammer or blade?

TIA.

We run a Rears Pak-Flail with hammers. This is used mostly to chop orchard pruning's from apple and peach trees but we also use it in areas we do not mow but once or twice a year. Ours can be hydraulically offset to one side. It does great on pruning's but even better on standing saplings in rough areas. Leaves a small stub that usually is not all splintered. The Pak-Flail also has a rear flap that can be adjusted to either spit out wood chunks or further process the brush. It might be a bit overkill for what you are doing but they are heavy duty and do come in different sizes. We run an 8' on a JD 7400 tractor, which is also overkill but it runs it well.

We also have a mcconell arm mower that has hammers instead of flails. This does a better job on brush and little saplings.

Both mowers will mow grass and do an OK job. If you are looking for a nice job of mowing grass flails would be better than hammers in my opinion.

Big difference in flail mowers.I have 2 MC (Matthews Corp) flails, the one has light short thin steel flails does a good job as a lawn mower has a box it throws the clippings in that I use for garden mulch. The other ones has big heavy thick steel flails or hammers can use it as a brush hog. Both have to be pulled slower than a rotary cutter or brush hog and take more HP.

I have a New Holland heavy duty flail mower that works great on weeds, grass, and small saplings,it has the longer one piece blades, you don't want the shorter blades that are basicly on a ring they are only good for a lawn.
