Mini square baler

You are apparently in the market for those mini balers that make the small (guessing like 18 inches by say 6 inches) straw bales that oyu see at higher end seasonal stores in time for halloween? You will have a rough time finding a used one and if you do, bring your largest check book you have. Regardless of where you live, your 5 year old will probably have the most expensive toy on the block.

A baler is a precision crafted machine, a mini-baler even more so. They are usually custom made by an old machinest plying his trade. Not something I would call atoy. Make a box with wire guides and a ram and make your bales. gobble

Tomturkey reminded me of something I hadn't thought of in decades. Dad made me a baler to pull with my pedal tractor. It was just a wooden box on a piece of angle iron with wheels and a tongue so I could pull it with me Oliver 88 pedal tractor. Both ends were open and he drilled holes toward one end to slide baler twine through. I'd push hay or straw in by hand and when it was full to the other end, I'd pull the strings through and tie them off.

Thanks for the memories.

What like this (sadly this baler was just sold)? Custom New Holland 273 Baler that makes Mini Bales. This baler makes 8x11 hay bales. This was on Facebook marketplace, they were asking a good amount of money

Seen a few of them at shows making the little bales,, all were hand made I have been going to do one just have not got started yet

John Deere made a few, experimental type thing probably in the 50s. Bale was 8x10 to something and really compact. Heavy for the size. My dad worked at the JD dealer here and they had one they did demos at some local places. Most guys just they didn't want to handle MORE bales. I don't think the baler was ever put into regular production.

Have you seen what craft stores sell the
mini bales for? I could buy almost a dozen
bales of regular size for one of them, so
if they do sell a bunch of small bales at
their prices it wouldn't take long to pay
for it lol.

The John Deere #10 Hi-density baler was made 1963-??? Only one I ever saw was at a JD show in Fairview, Oklahoma in about 2002 or so. They baled some straw with it. Don't remember for sure but seems like the bales may have been about 12" X 12", wire tied. After the show was over there were some of the bales still laying in the field so I confiscated one and took it home. However, it wasn't hi-density; loosely made, not good at all. I had it laying around in my barn for several years and finally decided to not keep it and used it. If it would have been tied densily, I may have kept it. Kinda cute.

I’m looking for more the mini size not necessarily
the small. More like a crafters size.
I’ve seen homemade balers but I don’t have the
machines to make my own. Folks that make one
done make them for sale. Hoping to find someone
who’s made one but done with it.

Like this one in this picture.
Is that functional? It looks like a hand made display toy.

I remember John Deere day they showed the high density baler baling hay, more stroke's per minute, but didnt know they never made them for production!!

Yes it’s functional, but slow, but it’ll work for what we
are going to use it for. Educational enlightenment

The one In the picture is wheel driven gears work when wheel turns.
There’s other small one ran by hit-n-miss engines.
