Manure spreader

I had the apron chain on my
spreader let go over the weekend.
While working on it I noticed some
of the slats were bolted and some
were riveted. I need to reattach a
couple of slats and was wondering
what type of bolts would be used?
Thanks.

I just used grade 3 bolts that would fit in the rivet holes. I think they were 5/16 but they might have been 3/8". Whatever will fit will be fine and they will rust in place solidly in a month, so don't worry about lock washers.

There are bolts meant for it - they have a splined shoulder that sucks its way in to the hole and provides a tight, snug fit. The main advantage to them is they have a rounded head like a carriage bolt that won't create a catch-point and grind a groove into your bed (if you care about that - more important for the beds that are a thin sheet of UHMW/puck-board over lumber) and it will at least lock itself in there and stop the head from turning so you can tighten down the nut on top. The problem with carriage bolts is the holes in the slats and links aren't square, so you either have to use a carriage bolt with a square shoulder small enough to fit in the hole (meaning your bolt diameter will be smaller and more apt to break), or the square shoulder will not prevent the bolt head from seating fully and create a catch point that will in turn grind its way into the bed.

Ultimately I (and probably most people) use whatever fastener's handy and gets me back spreading, be it carriage, button-head, regular hex-head, or whatever.
