Re: New Holland 489 questions on knife/guards/hold down cli

Hi HD

What you need to know would be in the service parts book. I have one for a 492 so similar to 489. You could look online on the NH website and hopefully see it in the parts drawing. Just checked and the manual is not a whole lot of help. Obviously you need one for the right hand end part no
577311 and a high one to accommodate the knife head part no 288074 and it indicates 15 of 287458 and 3 of 850135 which makes no sense to me, this is for stub guards only which is the only cutter bar shown in the manual. Just had a look at my machine and there are 8 hold down clips. If you
start from the right hand end (as if sitting on the tractor) you have right hand side clip then skip a bolt hold down clip skip two bolts hold down clip across toward the knife head. I don't appear to have a high clip near the knife head don't know what happened there but it certainly works. There are
spacer plates called shims under the hold downs I reused these. Went for genuine parts as aftermarket where not available, one big difference I did notice is the genuine guards are a lot harder than the copies so should last longer but do cost more. Can I suggest you look at bolts for the knife
sections as these are so much easier than rivets.

Hello Matt and thanks for your reply. I have three knife assemblies two are bolt ons and one is riveted. One of the three is useless to me. I will try and find the link to NH that might have how the original machine was set up in regards to hold downs. I ordered two of the higher ones for the "head end" and should have 16 of the low riding clips. On my machine I see no difference in the two end rock guards but ordered the right ones. Was tempted to use the new rock guards off my 469 which have about 10 acres on them before the wobble box died. But they are a .5 shorter in length of the rock guard points? Other than that they appear to be same dimentially. Didn't feel like going through the work to find out there is a reason for the longer points. All the clip hold downs are new as well on my old 469. I should sell that old one and get it out of my side yard.

I am a little confused by the bolt pattern of setting the clip hold downs per factory? I will try and look up the parts manual and see if I can make heads or tails out of it. I went out and counted the hold down clips on my 489 and counted 15 including the high clearance clips. As worn as these rock guards are I suspect the owner before me was trying to compensate for the horrendous wear. Will look up parts manual and the part numbers they use will make more sense hopefully. And save it too. Regards, John.
