New Holland 489 questions on knife/guards/hold down clips

My rock guards are completely worn out as are the hold downs I took off so far. On order and should be here soon. On my older 469 haybine I replaced the hold downs as they were when I bought it and they were spaced out a ways. On this 489 the guy had them every other rock guard. As worn as the rock guards were he might of been trying to compensate for wear? The original owner died so I can't ask him. So does anybody know how many or how close I should put them? I have both service manual and owner/operators manual and can't find a specified number or pattern. In one picture it looks like every other one but the picture is dark and hard to tell. Also Shoup sells what almost looks like a shim but is a Knife support or something like that. I know the hold down clips have a wear point to keep the cutter or knife in adjustment for lateral play. I forgot about them when ordered over the phone but don't see them on either of my 489s {one is parts machine} or my old 469. Was this pc not for the older 9 ft haybines or did someone not put them on before I owned it? Nothing I saw in the manual mentions them? Any thoughts appreciated. I did order two end guards and grade 5 nuts and bolts. The old guards were so worn the guards were beveled and the knife jumped up and down. The hold down clips some were worn almost to the bolt holes and thin as paper in spots. But you couldn't see it till you took it apart or at least I couldn't. Thanks, John. PS also had the wrong type of teeth for this machine but I didn't know that when I bought it.
