school me on hydraulic fittings

I'm cobbling together an old home made log splitter with my JD40S running a PTO hydraulic pump with reservoir (tractor's hydraulic system has too low flow to operate the splitter directly).

I needed a short ½" hose and bought a packaged one at Tractor Supply - ASSUMING one of the ends had a "swivel" (Couldn't see inside the packaging). Nope, both end fittings are "tight" to the hose.

Is there a convention for replacement hoses? A standard designation? Or is what you see what you get?

pretty much what you see is what you get. I order a lot of made up hydraulic hoses from Surplus Equipment to have on hand for loader. You have different choices of end type(swivel or not), thread, pipe or JIC. I usually get hydraulic hoses with no swivels and put a swivel on one end. I have also gotten an assortment of fittings from Surplus Equipment as it is cheaper than local suppliers. Since most of my hoses are 1/2 inch I keep extra 1/2 swivels and 90 degree with swivel on hand. Much cheaper to get made up hoses, as you did from TSC than to get them made up.

You can get an adapter with a swivel to fix the problem you have. Most hoses can have a swivel on them or not

Ohh, forgot to add, is your hose really only 1/2 an inch, or is it 1/2 diameter hose?

Reason I ask is if your hose is say, 3 feet long and doesn't swivel, I often tighten one side, then pre-twist the other side before attempting to tighten. This way when I tighten the other side, the pre-twists come out and it ends up lining up perfect.

As said, you can buy a cheap swivel fitting/adapter. It will be on the rack beside the hoses.I have a box full of them. I could mail you one,but the postage would be more than the cost of the fitting. The fitting itself would be free.

Every prepackaged hose I’ve seen in general are male pipethread ends on both ends. I live in rural area and that is the common hose.

Then there is a wall of adaptor parts, so you can add swivel, jic, o-ring, male/female combinations, 45 and 90 degree elbows. Enlarge or reduce from 1/4 to 5/8 inch. And on and on. You will find they will always be out of the one adaptor you need, of the dozens and dozens they have there.....

I sure wouldn’t want to always pay for a swivel if I don’t need one, so both ends the common threaded is the way to go.

Alternatively you can go to the good auto parts/ machine shop/ farm parts store in town and they will build you exactly the hose with the exact ends on it you want. This will cost more, it is custom hose.

Agreed, on pre-made hoses rigid male pipe is common on both ends, and the adapter fittings provide options. My luck has generally been those pipe thread hose fittings with a swivel made in them will leak in the swivel before the hose itself goes bad. So I would rather use a male/female pipe swivel adapter, and it is less expensive. JIC and flat face O-ring ends will usually have a rigid and a swivel end, but those type ends aren't commonly found on the pre-made shelf stock.
