Setting the safety on NH 451 mower

I was having problems with the safety trip popping loose and mower swinging back. It was due to the mower bar not being adjusted level but rather being adjusted with bar tilted to far down
Book says to adjust the trip mechanism so that when 400 pds pull is on end of mower bar it will trip. So how have you set this adjustment to 400 Pounds of trip force?
Do not have a scale that big. Thought about tiring rope to end of bar and run it to a pulley and then to a big bucket and put 400 pds I’d steel in the bucket. Over tighten the spring first then back off till it trips.
Thoughts.

I've cut a LOT of acres with a sickle mower and never "professionally" set the trip mechanism.

A little common sense goes a LONG way. Are you using a huge tractor, or a smaller one that is affected by the side loading before the mechanism trips. If a smaller tractor you can for sure "feel" the loading before it trips.

If it is "nuisance tripping", tripping while mowing, without striking an obstacle, it's a sure bet that the mover needs adjustment, such as cutterbar "lead" and verifying that the knife is "in register", or needs the knife sharpened, the guards checked for wear, and the wearplates checked and the holddowns adjusted to get the knife sections close to the guards or ledger plate (if old-style guards).

You can tell by the "stubble" remaining if the mower is in good order, it should look like it was clipped with a sharp scissor vs. literally having the hay torn off of it.

Lot of folk weld or bolt the trip shut..... not a good idea, just saying.

Just common sense, if it trips on every little thing tighten it up. A little.

Repeat until it’s not bothering much, but it’s good if it trips every once in a long while.

Just common sense.
